Hazard Mitigation Plan Adopted:
Federal Grant Received for Implementation

Hazard Mitigation is any action taken to reduce injuries, death, damages, economic losses, and degradation of natural resources due to natural hazard events. In September of 1997, the Town Council adopted a new multi-hazard mitigation strategy recommended by the Planning Commission. The new strategy will help Charlestown's existing efforts to save lives, protect property and reduce overall cleanup costs for the following hazards:

Coastal and Riverine Flooding
Coastal Storms and Beach Erosion
Forest Fires
Earthquakes
Severe Winter Storms

The strategy builds upon the existing Comprehensive Plan and uses existing personnel, programs and regulations to create a proactive strategy for the town. It is the first of it's kind to be adopted in the country. It's adoption qualified the town for a $108,000 grant, titled the Flood Mitigation Assistance Program, from the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency. The grant will be used for flood mitigation. Projects will include public education, flood control on Charlestown Beach Road, and assisting several volunteer residents with flood proofing demonstration projects. These demonstrations will teach other residents some of the things they can do to protect their own property. We have also provided an online resource for Hazard Mitigation. The first is a Hazard Mitigation Map (HazMap) showing the problems of the affected areas. The second is a Hazard Mitigation Strategies list, listing problems and how to address them.
